Product Certification
Ap logo(Approved Product)
The AP (Approved Product) label confirms that the safety of art materials has passed the testing of toxicology experts, proving that the product ingredients do not contain sufficient amounts of raw materials that can cause harm or toxic effects to the human body (including children), and will not cause acute or chronic harm to the human body. AP labels are replacing the original non-toxic labels CP (Certified Product) and HL (Health Label). The AP label certifies that ACMI approved products comply with ASTM D 4236: Chronic Toxins Labeling Standard and the Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA): Hazardous Art Materials Labeling Requirements. In addition, products with AP labels and performance certification certificates or CP labels are certified to meet special standards for materials, processes, quality of use, and color established by ACMI and other standard organizations such as ANSI, ASTM, etc. Some products cannot obtain performance certificates because there are currently no standards applicable to these products.
The Art&Creative Materials Institute, Inc., abbreviated as ACMI, is a non-profit association of producers of art, crafts, and other creative materials. Since 1940, ACMI has initiated a certification program for children's art products, certifying that the products are non-toxic and meet the requirements of quality and performance standards. ACMI's certification program has been recognized by experts in the field of toxicology and is one of the most respected standards in the industry. The society constantly modifies its standards to accept new applications.
The process of obtaining an AP seal generally involves the following steps:
1. Consulting firms assist manufacturers in applying for membership with ACMI, which is a prerequisite for applying for certification (product sales and other documents need to be submitted during the application process);
2. ACMI approves the membership of manufacturers;
3. Under the guidance of the consulting company, the manufacturer applies for product toxicity testing from ACMI accredited toxicology testing experts and obtains a testing report;
4. The consulting company assists the manufacturer in submitting the test results to ACMI, who will review the results and certify the product.
The cost of applying for an AP seal from ACMI mainly includes the following parts:
1. ACMI membership application fee: $500;
2. ACMI certificate annual fee: at least $750 per year, increasing proportionally based on the product's sales revenue;
3. Product testing and expert certification: determined by product type, properties, and ingredients.
